  As the first part of trilogy The Doctor Diaries, The Alaskan Gambit starts to tell the life story of the Russian doctor Tolstikov, who moves to North America in 1800s.

The Russian doctor receives a letter from the Russian officer, who serves in Alaska. Both men start to write to each other without a chance to meet in person. After time, they meet each other in Tsar's audience room, being asked to visit the Russian Imperator. The gambit means the tripping, is a chess opening in which a player sacrifices a pawn with the hope of achieving a resulting advantageous position. The same can be happen in real life between alive people as they play a game of fate.
